Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery is the surgical specialty that involves the diagnosis and management (surgical and non-surgical) of diseases involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral-maxillofacial/head & neck region.

Training in Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery requires a minimum of 4-6 years in an accredited hospital-based residency training program following the completion of dental school (D.D.S./D.M.D.). Many of the surgeons have completed medical degrees (M.D.) as well as advanced training fellowships in areas such as head & neck cancer surgery, microvascular surgery, cleft lip & palate and craniofacial surgery.

Our Mission

Dr. Gary WarburtonMission Statement: "To train citizen surgeons"

Welcome to the Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery website at the University of Maryland. The department is affiliated with the School of Dentistry and the University of Maryland Medical Center/R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center has been active since the 1930s. Over the years, we have graduated many residents and fellows who have gone on to illustrious careers in academics and private practice.

This program, through its robust full-time and part-time OMS faculty, trains surgeons in the contemporary scope of oral-maxillofacial surgery to include implants, office anesthesia, dentoalveolar surgery, head and neck pathology, hard and soft tissue facial reconstruction, cleft-craniofacial surgery, TMJ surgery, CMF trauma, facial aesthetic surgery, and corrective jaw surgery.

We offer two residency training programs (one four-year and two six-year positions), several one-year internship positions, and a fellowship in maxillofacial oncology and microvascular reconstruction. The residency and the fellowship are fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Maryland offers a sampling of all the eastern United States has to offer, with easy access to the entire east coast corridor. Residents are close to the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Coast, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Nation’s Capital.

Thank you for your interest in our program, and please feel free to contact us for any additional information.

Yours sincerely,
Gary Warburton., DDS, MD, FACS

About Us

The Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) has achieved international prominence in clinical care, teaching, and research and has been active since the 1930's.

The Department's clinical reputation is built on the quality of our practitioners and a full scope of treatment and specialization.  Beyond basic techniques of minor oral surgery (e.g. extractions, implants, sedation/anesthesia), our surgeons perform a wide range of advanced procedures, including but not limited to corrective jaw surgery, temporomandibular joint replacement, cleft lip and palate reconstruction, facial soft tissue reconstruction, and treatment of oral head and neck cancer.

In addition, the program provides 24-hour service to our nationally recognized R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in managing complex head and neck trauma cases. We also partner with the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. Most importantly, the program is training a new generation of surgeons who are taking these advanced skills to communities all around the world.
