Dr. Hayelom Kebede Mekonen is an academician and researcher with a robust background in anatomy, developmental biology, and neuroscience. He earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology (Embryology) from Maastricht University, an M.Sc. in Human Anatomy from Addis Ababa University, and a B.Sc. in Biology from the same institution. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Professor and Gross Anatomy Course Director at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, with Primary appointment at School of Dentistry and secondary appointment at School of Medicine.

Dr. Mekonen's research interests span in pain mechanism, neural development (neuroscience), Embryology & teratology. His work integrates in advanced laboratory techniques such as histological tissue analysis, animal models of pain, and molecular imaging to investigate complex biological processes. He has a strong track record of mentoring graduate students and contributing to academic leadership, having previously held senior roles, including Dean and Research Director at Mekelle University in Ethiopia.

An active scholar, Dr. Mekonen has authored numerous publications on topics such as neural tube defects, developmental anomalies, pain sensitivity, and human anatomy, which have been featured in reputable journals. His research has also addressed public health issues in Ethiopia, including congenital malformations and their links to nutrition and healthcare access. Through his teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Mekonen continues to make significant contributions to advancing science and education in developmental biology and neuroscience.
