Lisa Bress, RDH, MS

Sophia Arabatzis Balis, DDS, formerly of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry (retired), was inducted into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame, which honors women in the state who have made unique and lasting contributions. Balis was the first woman to be appointed to the school faculty in 1966 and was a lecturer and clinical supervisor of sophomore and junio dental students until she retired in July 1991.

Vineet Dhar, BDS, MS, PhD, clinical associate professor and graduate program director in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, received the Paul P. Taylor award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) for his article “Evidence of Effectiveness of Current Therapies to Prevent and Treat Early Childhood Caries,” during the 2016 AAPD Annual Session on May 29th

‌Jacquelyn Fried, RDH, MS, associate professor, director of interprofessional initiatives and acting graduate program director in the Department of Dental Hygiene, received the Irene Newman award from the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) for outstanding achievement and dedication to the profession of dental hygiene during the 2016 ADHA annual conference in Pittsburgh, June 8-14.

Jie Ge, DDS '17

V‌alli Meeks, DDS, MS, RDH, clinical associate professor in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Services, and director of the PLUS Clinic, was honored in December with the Heroes Among Us award, presented by the Greater Baltimore HIV Health Services Planning Council in recognition of "outstanding efforts in the Baltimore HIV community."

Katrina Reynolds, DDS ’17, received the Williams S. Kramer Award of Excellence at the Phi Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Chapter President Karen Faraone, DDS '78, assistant dean for student affairs at the school, presented the award, which recognizes a junior dental student who has demonstrated scholarship, character, and potential promise.

Paul S. Rosen, DMD, MS '90, clinical professor of periodontics, Dean's Faculty, is the 2015 recipient of the Master Clinician Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, which recognizes a member who has demonstrated clinical excellence and who continually expresses a willingness to share that clinical experience with others. 

Harlan J. Shiau, DDS, DMed, Sc, clinical associate professor and director of Predoctoral periodontal education in the Department of Periodontics, was awarded the 2015 Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. The fellowship provides support to those who may be facing educational debt while striving to establish themselves in an academic role.

Mark Shirtliff, PhD, associate professor, and Janette Harro, PhD, research associate, both in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis, are among the inventors of "Multivalent Vaccine Protection from Staphylococcus Aureus Infection," which received a U.S. patent. 

Jon B. Suzuki, DDS '82, PhD, MBA, Dean's Faculty, was appointed to chair the dental products panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Commitee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dean Mark A. Reynolds, DDS '86, PhD, MA, is a member of the panel.

Sheryl Syme, RDH, BS, MPH associate professor and director of the degree completion program in the Department of Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Periodontics, received the Linda DeVore Dental Hygiene Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry during the alumni weekend opening reception on June 3rd.
