Speaker Biography

Dr. El-Awady is an Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the Dental College of Georgia, Augusta University. Dr. El-Awady holds several academic qualifications, including Diplomate status from the American Board of Periodontology, a Ph.D. in Oral Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology, and a Ph.D. in Periodontology and Oral Medicine. He also serves as the Acting Director of Advanced Education in Periodontics Program and the Chair of the DCG Faculty Senate. His commitment to bridging basic science and clinical practice defines his research philosophy. Dr. El-Awady’s laboratory investigates the role of the oral consortium in xenophagy inhibition and inflammasome signaling within dendritic cells, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) prevalence, and its role in periodontitis. Beyond the lab, Dr. El-Awady is a trailblazer in clinical research in periimplantitis, crown lengthening, and NSAID effects on implants. In addition, his team recently completed a significant three-year clinical trial evaluating pharmacogenomics in personalized prescriptions during periodontal surgeries—a pioneering effort in dental schools nationwide. He and his team's collaborative and innovative approach aims to continue participation in the field of periodontics, benefiting patients and students.

 

Course Description

The course will explore selected techniques of regenerative surgery, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the indications and contraindications for regenerating lost periodontal tissues. The course will also cover essential topics such as bone grafts, guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and the role of biologic mediators in enhancing regenerative outcomes.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Explore various techniques of regenerative surgery, including recent advancements that enhance procedural effectiveness and patient outcomes.
  • Understand the indications and contraindications for regenerating lost periodontal tissues, with an emphasis on the latest research and clinical guidelines.
