Speaker Biography

Dr. Thomas Nguyen is the associate director of the division of periodontics and director of continuing dental education at the McGill Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences.  He was previously an instructor and director of predoctoral periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Nguyen received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Montreal. He subsequently completed an AEGD residency from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, an MSc in craniofacial tissue engineering at McGill University, and his training in Periodontology at the University of Minnesota. He is a board-certified specialist in periodontology and implant surgery. Dr. Nguyen is both a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Course Description

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced spectacular development and growth over the past two decades. With recent progress in digitized data acquisition, machine learning and computing infrastructure, AI applications are expanding into areas that were previously thought to be reserved for human experts. When applied to medicine and dentistry, AI has tremendous potential to improve patient care and revolutionize the health care field. In dentistry, AI is being investigated for a variety of purposes, specifically identification of normal and abnormal structures, diagnosis of diseases and prediction of treatment outcomes. This presentation will review some current and future applications of AI in dentistry.
