Dr. Bavoil Biography
Dr. Bavoil's research includes the pathogenesis of multiple species of the obligate intracellular pathogen, Chlamydia. Research areas include comparative genomics within the Chlamydiaceae, the role of the chlamydial type III secretion system in pathogenesis and intracellular development, the impact of Chlamydia phage infection on disease, the role of the polymorphic membrane protein family of Chlamydia trachomatis in infection and disease, and studies of the triangular relationship between vaginal ecology, pathogenomic properties of the infecting chlamydiae and disease outcome in the infected host.
Jacques Ravel (UMB-IGS), Jason Gleghorn (University of Delaware) and Patrik Bavoil (UMB) are currently co-Directors of the NIH-NIAID-funded Cooperative Research Center “Structure, Immunity and Microbiome: Human 3D Biomimetic Cervicovaginal models for sexually transmitted infections (SIM-STI)”. SIM-STI includes the bioengineering of ‘organ-on-a-chip’ biomimetic models led by Dr. Gleghorn, and the reconstitution of permissive vs. non-permissive vaginal microbiota in the models led by Dr. Ravel, Vonetta Edwards (UMB-IGS) and Larry Forney (University of Idaho). The models are used to study the impact of the microbiota on chlamydial and gonococcal infections. Two complementary projects, respectively led by Drs. Isabelle Derré and Alison Criss (University of Virginia), exploit the biomimetic models and reconstituted microbiota to investigate the impact of the endocrine response on Chlamydia trachomatis infection and that of the immune response on Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection and C. trachomatis/N. gonorrhoeae co-infections.
Bavoil is a Trustee/ of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS), where, as Director, Research and Publications, he oversees seven FEMS publications.
Bavoil is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM).
