UMSOD Announces New Advanced Dual Certificate in Periodontics and Prosthodontics

August 31, 2023    |

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) is pleased to announce a new Advanced Dual Certificate Track in Periodontics and Prosthodontics (Dual Certificate Program). This program is a significant point of pride, as UMSOD is currently the only school that has been approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation to offer this dual certificate track clinical education residency integrating both periodontics and prosthodontics.

The school envisions this program to be of great interest to dental school graduates looking for this specialty. Yearly, over the last 20 years, residents completing a periodontics or prosthodontic postgraduate program have looked to enhance their training through the UMSOD Implant Periodontal Prosthodontics Fellowship Program. Additionally, several UMSOD residents have recently become dual-trained by completing both CODA recognized training programs separately. Historically, completion of both post-graduate specialty programs would require 6 years, as each postgraduate program is 36 months in duration.

The dental school’s newly accredited 5 year (60-month) dual certificate track integrates didactic, clinical, teaching, and research activities in both the periodontics and prosthodontics post-graduate programs and emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to clinically complex cases including dental implant therapy. Upon completion of the dual-track programs, the graduate will be eligible for Board Certification in Prosthodontics and Periodontics and for a Master of Science degree in Dental Biomedical Sciences.

“Strategies to foster the integration of oral health care delivery and advance clinical outcomes through excellence and innovation in training are central to our mission.” said Dean Mark Reynolds, DDS, PhD.  “The predictable long-term treatment success of patients requiring complex oral rehabilitation is highly dependent on prosthetic design and periodontal and peri- implant health.”

“The school of dentistry’s preeminent faculty are ideally suited to train highly motivated dentists in prosthodontics and periodontics, enabling them to expertly manage and treat a wide scope of complex clinical conditions.” Dean Reynolds continued.

To apply, the Dual Certificate Program requires a completed application for both Periodontics and Prosthodontics.
